The redshift-dependence of gamma-ray absorption in the environments of strong-line AGN

چکیده

The case of γ-ray absorption due to photon-photon pair production of jet photons in the external photon environment like accretion disk and broad-line region radiation field of γ-ray loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) that exhibit strong emission lines is considered. I demonstrate that this ”local opacity”, if detected, will almost unavoidably be redshift-dependent in the sub-TeV range. This introduces non-negligible biases, and complicates approaches for studying the evolution of the extragalactic background light with contemporary GeV instruments like e.g. the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), etc., where the γ-ray horizon is probed by means of statistical analysis of absorption features (e.g. Fazio-Stecker relation, etc.) in AGN spectra at various redshifts. It particularly applies to strong-line quasars where external photon fields are potentially involved in γ-ray production. Subject headings: gamma rays: theory – diffuse radiation – radiation mechanisms: non-thermal – galaxies: active, nuclei – galaxies: evolution

The environmental dependence of radio–loud AGN activity and star formation in the 2dFGRS

By combining the 2–degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey at 1.4 GHz, the environments of radio loud AGN in the nearby Universe are investigated using both local projected galaxy densities and a friends–of–friends group finding algorithm. Radio–loud AGN are preferentially located in galaxy groups and poor–to–moderate richness galaxy clusters. The AGN fraction appears t...

XMM-Newton spectra of hard spectrum Rosat AGN: X–ray absorption and optical reddening

We present the XMM-Newton spectra of three low-redshift intermediate Seyferts (one Sy1.5, and two Sy1.8), from our survey of hard spectrum Rosat sources. The three AGN are well fitted by absorbed powerlaws, with intrinsic nuclear photoelectric absorption from column densities between 1.3 and 4.0 ×1021 cm−2. In the brightest object the X–ray spectrum is good enough to show that the absorber is n...

On radio-bright Active Galactic Nuclei in a complete Spectroscopic Redshift Survey

Analysis of the frequency and physical properties of galaxies with starformation and AGN activity in different environments in the local universe is a cornerstone for understanding structure formation and galaxy evolution. We have built a new multiwavelength catalog for galaxies in a complete redshift survey (the 15R Survey), gathering information on their Hα, R-band, radio, far-infrared, and X...

A Bayesian likelihood analysis is used to constrain the redshift of the optical transient associated with gamma-ray burst 970508, under the assumption that the absorption at redshift 0.835 is not physically associated with the transient. The maximum-likelihood, expectation value and 95-percent upper limit on the OT redshift are 0.835, 1.3 and 1.9 respectively. Subject headings: methods: statist...
